Shakespeare at the Towers is committed to making our productions as accessible as possible for the local community.
We set aside the front row for those audience members in wheelchairs – and each wheelchair space includes a free seat for a carer.
We also offer free carer tickets to those audience members who would not be able to attend without the help of a carer.
We also offer a Captioned Performance for those who are deaf or experiencing hearing loss and a Touch Tour for those experiencing a loss of sight or who are blind. Visit our Tickets page for performance dates and how to book.
Captioned Performance
Theatre captioning is similar to television subtitling and gives deaf, deafened and hard of hearing theatregoers access to live performance. It is also useful for those wanting to introduce children to Shakespeare as it helps reinforce what is being said.
Since 2014 we have provided a captioned evening during each of our summer productions to make Shakespeare’s plays accessible for the deaf and hard of hearing community in Huntingdon and Cambridgeshire.
Our captioned performance is provided by Stagetext who provide captioning services to some of the country’s most famous theatres including the National Theatre, Shakespeare’s Globe, and The Royal Exchange Manchester.
We would like to thank The Evelyn Glennie Foundation and Huntingdonshire History Festival for their generosity in helping us fund the captioned performance.
Touch Tour
Developed to help those audience members with impaired sight better visualise what is happening as the performance is taking place, the Touch Tour allows access to the stage before the show starts so they can be guided through the scenes of the play, explaining what will happen and indicating entrances and exits.
In addition, those audience members on the tour will be able to handle the props, touch the scenery and get a feel for some of the costumes so they can get an idea of what the cast will be wearing and better appreciate the period and style of the play, providing greater familiarity from the beginning.
