Award-winning percussionist Dame Evelyn Glennie has become the new Patron of the Shakespeare at the Towers Charitable Trust and takes over the role following the departure of Dame Norma Major, who has stepped down after 20 years’ service.

Dame Evelyn Glennie is the world’s premier solo percussionist, a double GRAMMY award winner and BAFTA nominee. She composes for film, theatre and television and has over 100 international awards to date. Evelyn was awarded an OBE in 1993 and made a Dame Commander of the Order of the British Empire (DBE) in the 2007 New Year Honours List.

As a deaf musician, Huntingdon-based Dame Evelyn has a life-long mission to ‘Teach the World to Listen’ and, as well as being a keen supporter of the Trust’s outdoor Shakespeare productions, has helped to make shows more inclusive through The Evelyn Glennie Foundation’s sponsorship of a captioned performance each year. As Patron, she is excited to collaborate with Shakespeare at the Towers to find ways of inspiring, engaging and educating future generations and making performances as accessible as possible to everyone.

Her appointment follows Dame Norma Major’s decision to step down as Patron, having been incredibly generous with her time, experience and passion for Shakespeare’s work over the last 20 years for which the Shakespeare at the Towers Trustees are immensely grateful.
